Indian Temple Sculpture

Serious but also fascinating
I have no expertise in this subject but was interested because of the emphasis on the architectural setting of Indian sculpture. In fact, this book offers a fascinating approach to its subject by concentrating on the use and function of temple sculpture as much as its symbolic meaning and aesthetics (these being the more normal art historical approach). Although published by a museum, it offers a very broad ranging approach to its subject. If you were travelling to India and intending to visit more than one or two temples, it would be essential reading.

Comprehensive !!
This writing offers a lucid, methodical and well illustrated overview of Temple architecture - their location, functions aesthetic, sculpture, vocabulary besides appreciation for the interested lay person. Impressive!!

A scholarly project
The is published by Victoria and Albert Museum and that establishes its credentials right away. The research is thorough, the book is well edited and printed. My only complaint is that the pictures are black and white. They could have done better with the quality and number of illustrations.Overall, I am well satisfied, but someone more knowledgeable than I might not be.
